Diary of a Dub

To so many it means nothing, to so few it few means everything.

And then there was 3. 3 games. To a 4-in-a-row.

The Path doth become clearer. 3 games between us and a 4-in-a-row. Think about it, if only for a moment. To so many it means nothing, to so few it few means everything.

Nobody in this lifetime knows of a 4-in-a-row from Dublin. Some of us saw a Kerry team do it. 1978 – 1981. We all remember 1982, Seamus Darby and that goal. Offaly had no right to win it, yet they did. They stopped arguably the greatest GAA football team of all time (YES, I’m a Dub, and I admit this team was invincible)

Super 8’s. A new format. More games. No more quarter finals. Snowflakes aplenty. Can’t play the game here, can’t play the game there. Seriously, I mean, seriously. The world has disappeared into itself, a politically corrected version of itself has been rejected by aliens as having potential for invading. ‘Mad bastards down there’ they were heard muttering as they drove on. Everything is either protested or hugely offensive. Soon, science will find ways to out us in the future for our past life misdemeanors.

I, for one, welcome the, Super 8’s. The Dubs on tour. Did you ever see such a sight on the streets of Omagh, did we ever think we would? And to the people of Tyrone and Omagh, a better welcome there could not have been. It will catch on, and teams will adjust, but it’s a step in the right direction. It doesn’t solve the provincial championships, but one step at a time if you will. The GAA wheels of change move slowly, and any change is to be welcomed, even if it’s not perfect first time round.

There couldn’t be a Diary without a mention of the summer that was #Itsnevercominghome. Subjected (joyfully) to our English compadres getting over excited after a group game win and feeling like they could take on the world.  How much fun was that? Under what conditions would I support Engerland? Only if they were playing Meath lol.
So. Where are we?
Truth is. We are now a game closer to a 4-in-a-row. That’s all it is. Tyrone was another game, but a potential banana skin, Donegal was another game. Obstacles overcome. Machine like Dublin are. No ‘Champagne Supernova’ yet and nor would we expect it. Functional games. What the outsiders won’t appreciate is that this was Tyrone’s backyard. A pitch narrowed. A hostile atmosphere called for. Neither of which mattered. ‘ewh, Dublin won again, ffs’…I can hear it. I’m already hearing the ‘Boring’ tag labelled from some of the anti-dublin snowflake journalists. Too fucking lazy to appreciate the manner in which Dublin set out to dominate games, by controlling possession, by being measured, by being composed. Easier to write ‘Dubs are Boring’. It is what it is. Do they call Real Madrid or Barcelona boring? Do they fuck. Their spite is a means to their ends, and good luck to those ‘Arseboxes’. Success always breeds contempt.

Super 8 Summary. Controlled. 15 Jim Gavin’s on the pitch. For the first time I could see his composure in those players. Without being arrogant, the swagger of this team in its composure is incredible, given the ages involved. Sportsmen at their highest level

The bigger questions is… In this world of instant entertainment, what do you want? Instant snowflake stim because you are offended? Or, like most of us (Couldntgiveafuckers), getting on with living in the moment and enjoying it for what it actually fucking is.

We realise what this is. Obstacles are overcome. Jobs are done. We move on. No fuss. We, the real fans, are slowly becoming 100,000 Jim G’s. ‘Go Raibh Mile Agat’ is soon to become the most common expression in Dublin. Think about it. In the world of snowflakes, will they give out that he speaks our native tongue??

A Final thought must go to Kerry and Mayo. A Long, long time, since either were not involved in an All-Ireland semi-final. It’s not our job to get them there, it is their responsibility to have the hunger to challenge us, and the conviction to see it through. This year, we welcome others to challenge and they are there on merit. As of Kerry and Mayo, we will see you again and the sooner the better. Gaelic football is better when you are both strong and challenging.

And to finish, and share my thoughts of tomorrow. Here we are….In this new snowflake world, Yet I don’t worry. Yet, I don’t offend, but I do care. However, I have life. I have a dream. That dream is Blue. I believe.

We are but three steps from History. Tomorrow is another day.
